Union Minister Murugan visits Thiruparankundram hill, urges action on “unnecessary activities” – World News Network

Madurai (Tamil Nadu) [India], February 17 (ANI): Union Minister of State of Parliamentary Affairs of India L. Murugan visited Thirupparankundram Murugan Temple on Monday and later climbed the hill to offer prayers at the Kasi Viswanathar Shrine. However, citing security concerns, the police allowed only five people to accompany him, leading to a heated argument.
Questioning the police’s authority to impose such restrictions on a Union Minister, Murugan warned of consequences. The brief confrontation created tension in the area before he proceeded with his visit.
Speaking to media afterwards, Murugan alleged that “unnecessary activities” were taking place at the sacred Hindu site of Thirupparankundram Hill. He urged the Tamil Nadu government and the police to take immediate action and arrest those responsible.
Referring to a 1994 High Court ruling, he stressed that the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department must adhere to the court’s directives and ensure the proper conduct of religious festivals. He further asserted that Thirupparankundram is a Saivite pilgrimage site and strongly opposed any form of animal sacrifice there.
“In rural traditions, sacrifices are made to guardian deities like Karuppasamy and Madurai Veeran. However, such practices have never been part of Murugan temples or other Saiva-Vaishnava worship sites,” he stated.
He urged the Tamil Nadu government to take strict action and arrest those involved if any such activities had taken place on the hill. He also criticised recent police actions against Hindu leaders, accusing authorities of arresting them for speaking out on the issue.
Murugan further cited a 1931 court verdict, which, he claimed, declared the entire hill–except for a certain portion–belonging to Lord Murugan. However, he alleged that in 1983, Tamil Nadu revenue records mistakenly referred to it as Sikandar Malai. He insisted that the hill should be recognised solely as Thiruparankundram Malai. (ANI)
