“All our hopes on Supreme Court,” says Shia cleric as petitions against Waqf Act are being heard today – World News Network

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], April 16 (ANI): As Supreme Court begins hearing multiple petitions challenging the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025, Shia cleric Syed Kalbe Jawad, who is one of the petitioners said that he has “put all hopes” in the top court, calling the recently passed Act as a “black law” meant to destroy Waqf properties.
“All our hopes are from the Supreme Court. The Govt is compelled to impose the Waqt Amendment Act in all the states. This is a black law which will destroy all Waqf properties,” Jawad told ANI.
He alleged that a “conspiracy” was hatched after six BJP-led states moved the SC in support of the Waqf Bill: “For the first time, it is happening that State Governments are in favour of the Waqf Bill. The governments of six states have gone to the SC in support of the Waqf Bill. This shows such a big conspiracy is going on.”
Explaining further, he claimed that if state governments move the Supreme Court, then a constitutional bench has to be made, which will take time and till then, the Waqf properties will be destroyed
“This is the plan of theirs, because of state government goes then they will have to make a constitutional bench and time will take on that. Till then, they will destroy the properties of Waqf. This is the conspiracy,” he added.
Earlier today, Advocate Barun Kumar Sinha, who has filed an intervention application in SC on behalf of Hindu Sena, said that the amendments are “absolutely in consonance with the Constitution.”
“We have prayed that the amendment that was brought in in Waqf Act 1995 is absolutely in consonance with the Constitution of India. Nobody’s fundamental right has been violated. This amendment has been brought after the Govt of India carried out a very deep study on the complaints received from various parts of the country,” Sinha said.
The apex court’s bench, headed by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, is taking up around 10 pleas on the Waqf Bill. Justices Sanjay Kumar and KV Viswanathan will also be on the three judge bench.
Six states- Haryana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Assam have filed pleas in the top court supporting the Amendments to the religious board.
On the other side, leaders of AIMIM, AAP, TMC, DMK, TVK, and Congress have filed petitions against the law. (ANI)
